“Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11).
Get over the idea that there is a certain level of spiritual commitment that isn’t for you. Some people appear to have a limit in their minds. There is nothing ‘cool’ about being ‘cold’ spiritually. It is an oxymoron to be a lukewarm Christian. Every Christian should be vibrant, serious and sober.
To be Sober means to be serious, watchful, temperate, moderate regarding indulgence of appetite, grave. One of the most reoccurring phrases in the New Testament, especially in the writings of Paul is the instruction to BE SOBER. It’s not an instruction for spiritual leaders alone! Yes, spiritual leaders are instructed to be sober (1 Tim 3:2, Titus 1:7-8), but so is everyone else (1 Thess 5:6,8, 1 Peter 1:13, 4:7).
There is no age restriction in this regard. It’s for elderly men (Titus 2:2), young men (Titus 2:6), elderly women and young women (Titus 2:3-4). Practically everyone reading this falls into one of these categories. This instruction is repeated too often to be ignored! You ought to be serious and diligent in your devotion to the Lord. Go the extra mile. Today’s texts urge you and I to be fervent in Spirit. Friend, let there be some fervour in your approach to spiritual things. Let there be fervour in your prayer and word study life. Take the limits off.
