HOW NOT TO EVANGELIZE

“Go therefore[c] and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age”

(Mat 28:19,20)

Because there have been some cases of people who preach the gospel, but don’t show good example, another camp of people teach that you don’t have to preach. Their take is that by simply being a good Christian example, you can influence those around you without using your words.

This mindset is now so prevalent and with it a subconscious idea most people have about Christian responsibilities. They usually believe that they should be good examples at work, so good they are never associated with any scandal. They are also nicknamed ‘pastor’ or ‘spiro,’ probably because read their bibles or devotionals before work begins or pray before lunch.

Whenever someone is needed to lead prayers in general meetings, they are usually the ones called upon, and no one ever dares involve them in dirty talk or shady deals. In a nutshell, the idea is to preach the gospel with your lifestyle. That seems good, but it is not good enough. Why? Firstly, this is not what the Lord Jesus Christ commanded us to do. His commandment to us was to preach the gospel, letting others know about God’s salvation plan in Christ Jesus (Mat 28:19,20).Secondly, it simply isn’t effective. A Christian who expects others to become Christians without preaching to them is like a professor who expects his students to become graduates by simply studying his behavior. You must teach. If you leave people to learn from your behaviour, they will copy your morality. And that would be truly miserable, because it is not your morality that saves you, but faith in Jesus.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom 10:13,14,17). Faith comes by hearing not by seeing or observing. It comes by hearing the word of God.

There are only 2 billion Christians in the world. Everybody currently existing will be dead in hundred years. Do you really think that all who do not know the Lord can come to know him by simply watching us?
