“O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days”
Answer this question sincerely: “What makes you happy?” For quite a number of people, it is material things like cars, shoes and clothes. If you’re honest with yourself though, you’d agree that even the least materialistic person gets excited he gets a new pair of shoes or a new phone. Even the most conservative won’t mind a vehicle that doesn’t go bad every other day.
Even then, it would be petty to base your joy on those things; they go out of vogue before you even have the chance to enjoy them.
There are more important things in life…like relationships. If you’re young, you might think your parents get on your nerves, but it’s only a matter of time before you one day look at your white-haired parents, and pray that they spend more years with you before they leave. Even the most selfish people have given up material things because of love. Relationships make us happy and thank God that humans generally, have a much longer life span than cars, and shoes.
Nevertheless, life is still so short. The foundation of your joy is still faulty if it is built on relationships. How much time would we have with our loved ones? Ten decades at best? Eventually, they either leave you, or you leave them.
Thankfully, God has an offer for us that we cannot refuse- in Christ, you get to live forever! Many do not know this but Jesus states this clearly: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die” (John 11:25). Jesus is the only genuine source of joy. Every other thing that makes you happy will pass away, but in Him you will live forever!
