“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold…But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot”
You might have heard of people committing suicide or losing their minds because they lost a lot of money. Although it might seem justifiable to some people, it should make no sense to a Christian. Why? A Christian is worth more than stuff.
St. Augustine of Hippo said: “He who has God and everything else has no more than he who has God only.”
Your sense of worth should never be based on material things. Don’t forget, Jesus knows exactly why you’re following him. In John 6, people excitedly followed Jesus because he had given them bread earlier. However they changed their tune when he said in verse 38: “I am the bread come from heaven.” He didn’t spare them the truth. In John 6:54 he said: “Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” From that time, many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him (John 6:66).
God doesn’t want you to follow him for what he can give you; He wants your satisfaction to come from him alone. You must get beyond that point where something bad happens and you doubt the existence of God. You are really not following Jesus until you follow him for nothing else but him.
DO THIS: Spend time worshipping God for who he is and for the gift of eternal life he has given you.
