WHOSOEVER BELIEVES

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

Today’s text is the most famous bible text in the world, yet not many understand it. It’s clear from the text no one who believes in Jesus will perish. Why? Someone died in their place. There is no legal justification for making someone pay for a debt that has been cleared on his behalf. It’s either Jesus paid for my sins or He didn’t. If He did, then the believer will never be condemned.

Jesus went on to say: “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18). The basis for condemnation or justification is faith in Jesus. Sin has been taken care of. It’s now a question of whether or not we believe.
John puts it this way: “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world” (John 2: 1-2). It’ll take a person who is not objective to respond to this teaching with the question: “Are you saying we can go on in sin?” To this, John already responds, “I write unto you that you sin not.”

No genuinely born again person wishes to go on in sin. But the fact still remains that he ‘may’ sin. And if/when he does, he must acknowledge Jesus as the propitiation for his sins. Since Jesus died, we no longer get what we deserve. “For the wages of sin is death; BUT the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6: 23).
