WHO HAS RULE OVER YOU?

“Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you”
Hebrews 13:17

There are some ideas that may sound nice, but aren’t necessarily consistent with the truth of scripture.

One of such ideas is that you do not need a pastor or church; that by studying your bible and praying on your own, you can grow spiritually.

The reality however, is that this isn’t consistent with God’s design for your spiritual growth.

The early church didn’t just get people saved and leave them to grow on their own. Every time someone believed in Jesus, they were added to the church.

God’s plan for your spiritual growth is fellowship. Not only should you fellowship with other believers, you should have a pastor who has rule over you.

“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”
Ephesians 4:11-12

The role of your pastor isn’t to make you dependent on him, but to train you and encourage your charismatic ministry as a Christian.

The bible says that your pastor keeps watch over your soul. Who are you accountable to? When you are struggling in a particular area, who can call you to order? Who answers your bible questions? It can’t just be your friends, you need a pastor.

Going forward, we must look at a verse of scripture that may be misconstrued to mean that you don’t need a pastor.

1 John 2:27 says: “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.”

The Apostle was speaking about the Anti-Christ, and warning his audience about them.

The simple point of this text is that no one who has the Holy Spirit can be swayed to turn around later to say that Jesus is not the Christ.

Paul puts it this way elsewhere: “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost”
1 Corinthians 12:3

However, when it comes to the growth of the body of Christ, you need a pastor. Find a pastor who is apt to teach, is not money conscious, and encourages your charismatic ministry.
