LEGAL AND VITAL REALITIES

“And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith”
Phil 1:25

It was E.W Kenyon who said that the work of salvation is both legal and vital. Because we are sanctified legally, we can actually and vitally grow in sanctification.

This is why you notice this common thread in the letters of the Apostles.

They remind us about who we are in Christ and then give us instructions that we can obey because of this.

We see an example in 2 Peter 1. Here, Peter says that we “have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (verse 1).

He adds that Christ’s “divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue” (Verse 3).

And in 2 Peter 1:4 he says: “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

He does a good job of reminding us of who we are, and then he gives instructions in 2 Peter 1:5: “And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;”

The phrase, ‘And beside this’ is gotten from the Greek word ‘touto’ which can also be translated to mean ‘for this very reason’ or ‘because of this.’

Peter is saying in essence ‘you’ve got this,’ ‘you’re empowered to do this by God’s spirit on your inside.’

We’ll continue from here tomorrow.
