THE EPISTLES AND ITS INSTRUCTIONS

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves”
James 1:22

Like we have said several times, the word of God is for doing. Knowledge translates into wisdom when it’s applied.

That is why today, we’ll be looking at some instructions for daily living given to us in the epistles.

Col 3:20 says: “Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.”

We are to obey our parents not merely because it is a noble or moral thing to do but because when we honour our parents, we are doing the word.

Continuing in Col 3:21, the bible tells fathers, “provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.”

Don’t treat your children badly and claim that it’s normal for an African parent. You are first a child of God who takes God’s word seriously before you are an African parent.

The epistles also give instructions for your career in Col 3:22,23 (while we aren’t servants, the same principles apply in the workplace):

“Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”

Wow! You are to work as unto the Lord. Don’t steal from your boss because you haven’t been paid.

Don’t be lazy because you don’t like the working conditions. Work as if God is your boss.

God’s word also places a demand on your time.

Col 4:5 says: “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.”
Eph 5:16 reiterates this saying: “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

Set your time free from the things that render it ineffective.

Some of us spend too much time in front of the television, chatting away unproductively and doing things that don’t add value. Live your life responsibly.

Always remember that you have people to bless and a gospel to preach.
