“Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.”
God wants us to find satisfaction in Him. He is to be our object of delight forever.
We have higher concerns than material things. We recognize that “a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of things which he possesses” (Luke 12:15).
Anyone who lives solely for pleasure is dead while he lives (1 Tim 5:6).
This is why the Lord urges us in today’s charge that we do not make material things the ultimate object of our desire.
We should rather seek the meat that endures unto everlasting life. Unlike material things, this meat is inexhaustible.
A similar comparison was made by the Lord as He addressed the Samaritan woman in John 4.
It says: “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. ” John 4:10.
Where do we find this water? Where do you find this meat? In a person – Jesus Christ.
“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst”. John 6:35:
Jesus is our bread. He is our essence and delight.
