INCREASE IN THE BODY OF CHRIST

“From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love”
Ephesians 4:16

If you have ever doubted God’s design for the growth and edification of the body of Christ, the scripture above should make it crystal clear.

The body is nourished from the head through the ‘joints’. God uses people to help his people grow.

Reading some of the preceding verses before the text above will help you understand this better:

“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”
Ephesians 4:11-12

Christianity was never designed to be an island; God gave you ministry gifts so that you can grow and be effective in your ministry to others as well.

What then are the implications of this? For one, you can’t afford not to be under quality spiritual leadership.

Who is your pastor? Are you growing in the knowledge of Christ under his/her teachings? What about your local church? Do you experience progress and joy in the faith as you attend?

The answers to these questions are paramount to your own personal edification.

Secondly, you must not neglect your own responsibility of ‘supplying’ to the body of Christ.

The same way you have been taught in the Lord, you must also teach others. The body of Christ needs you to grow.

Someone evangelized to you before you got saved. There are millions of unsaved people in the world, it is your responsibility to evangelize to them as well.

In Acts 6, there was a need in the church for people to take on responsibility for feeding the widows so that the Apostles could focus on prayer and the study of the word.

Stephen and six others were chosen. See what happened almost immediately after:

“And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith”
Acts 6:7

The word of God increases when you get involved. Never underestimate your contribution!
