WHAT IS WISDOM?

“What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?”
James 2:14

It is one thing to know the meaning of a word. It is another thing for that word to become a part of your vocabulary. That’s a very simple analogy to define wisdom.

You are wise when knowledge flows from your heart to your hand. You walk in wisdom when you let the lessons you’ve learnt from God’s word find expression in your daily life.

It is important that you know how to connect what you hear with what you do or need to do. For example, let’s take a look at 1 John 3:16. It says:

“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”
1 John 3:16

You’ve learnt that Christ died for you (John 3:16). But you walk in wisdom when you don’t show it in your confession alone but in your willingness to show that level of sacrifice for the brethren. The word of God isn’t just for knowledge but for application.

That must be the reason why many refer to wisdom as the practical application of knowledge. I think, more importantly, it is the application of the right knowledge.

This distinction is very important when it comes to certain issues, especially when the subject matter is money. There are many things that believers have tried to do, in sincere faith that they were doing the word not knowing they received the wrong information in the first place.

Many have been taught that the one-way ticket out of financial challenges is to just ‘sow a seed.’

And so they are disappointed because, for years, they have been sowing dangerous seeds, sometimes giving away all they had and expecting a hundredfold increase but are still broke.

Don’t get me wrong, it is good to give, even ‘dangerously’ if you are led to do so. But the apostolic instruction for the man who will not go hungry is to do whatsoever his hand finds to do with all his might. When you are diligent in your work, you display that you are wise.

“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.”
2 Thessalonians 3:10

I have met believers who pay no attention to natural laws and made a mess of their lives. The world is not designed to operate by miracles but on a structure.

Laws are not subjective or diplomatic. The law of gravity doesn’t care whether you are 30 or 300 years old. If you jump off a building, you will fall down and hurt yourself.

You can trust God to favour your business but you must have something doing and be excellent at it. You can trust God for retentive memory, but you must study if you will succeed in your academics.

As you go through today, make sure that you are open to the supernatural, but by all means, be intentional about natural laws. That is wisdom. Apply it today!
