“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”
1 Peter 2:2
God’s number one priority for every unbeliever is salvation, His number one priority for the man who is saved is spiritual growth.
Spiritual growth is growth in the knowledge of Christ.
Jesus is the living Word, and the only way we can discern or understand Him is via the written word. The written word is what clearly reveals the Living Word.
We can’t know Him anymore than we know the word or love Him any more than we love the word.
Our opening scripture reveals to us that the word of God is an agent that facilitates growth.
Apostle Peter writing to believers insists that they desire the word. The word ‘desire’ means ‘to pursue with love’ or ‘to long after’.
The sincere milk of the word talks about the word being unadulterated, being pure. This is why the ministry of a faithful Pastor cannot be overemphasized.
Paul, before his departure to Jerusalem, commits the believers to God and the word. He informs them that the word has the ability to build.
“And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”
“Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.”
1 Timothy 4:15-16
Timothy was to meditate on the word, primarily Paul’s letter. His meditation on the word would cause him to experience advancement in the faith.
The word is the primary agent by which we experience spiritual growth. We can’t afford to take the ministry of the word lightly.
