“Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart” (2 Corinthians 3:3).

Giving the law to the Jews was akin to expecting a dead man to dance. They were dead in sin. They needed life, not laws. Morality is the result of life, and not a requirement for it. The law made nothing better. The writer of the book of Hebrew says: “For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another” (Hebrews 8:7). Paul called the law weak (see Romans 8:3).

Again I say, it would be rather funny to think that God tried out the law only to discover it couldn’t work. No friend. He knew the law could not make man righteous. In fact, that was the point of His giving it. God always had an original plan. Ezekiel prophesied it thus: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws” (Ezekiel 36:26-27).

See that? The fact that the law was written on tablets of stone was to signify the condition of the hearts of the children of Israel. But in Christ, we have received hearts of flesh. The laws of the Lord are written in our hearts by the Spirit of the living God (2 Corinthians 3:3). Halleluyah!
