“Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11).
Why should we be sober? Peter, the Apostle instructs us this: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world”(1 Peter 5:8-9). I must be vigilant because I have an adversary. Steadfastness in faith resists the devil.
Notice we are not told to resist the devil steadfastly. Rather, we are told that steadfastness in the faith resists the devil. There’s a difference. The New International Version puts it this way: “Resist him, standing firm in the faith…” Standing firm in the faith wards off the enemy.
Many Christians will rather allow trouble arise before they get serious. Then, they begin to run everywhere for help. How about you don’t give the devil a foothold in the first place? “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” (Ephesians 6:10-13). Steadfastness and sobriety prepare you for the day of trials. Live ready!
