One central truth that makes a Christian ‘Christian’ is the deity of Christ. That’s the dividing line between our faith and the religions of the world. Jesus is celebrated by many as ‘a great prophet’, a role model and so on, but we worship Jesus as God. That’s who He is!
From the scriptures to the gospel to the epistles, the bible is replete with revelation of His deity. In the scriptures, it was written of Him “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). He is the ‘mighty God’ and Everlasting father.’
In the gospels, (Matthew 22: 41-46) Jesus quizzes the Pharisees about who the Messiah is. Verses 43-44 say: “He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?” He proves to them that He is the Lord.
In the Epistles, amongst several is 1 Timothy 3:16 that says: “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh…”. Titus 2:13 calls him “the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” Romans 9:5 calls him “God blessed forever.” The bible is clear about His identity. Jesus Christ is more than a great prophet. He is God.
