“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God”

(Matthew 5:9).

The idea here is this: “God has made peace with us in Christ, as such, by ‘following peace with all men,’ we will be called children of God. Stop and think about this for a minute- God is a peacemaker! The salvation plan in Christ was His initiative. Yes, salvation is of the Lord. This is why when Jesus was born, Angels were happy for us. They said: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (Luke 2:14). Jesus- His birth, death and resurrection- is God’s good will towards men. Jesus was on a peace mission. “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

The gospel is a gospel of peace, for it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” Romans 10: 15. God preached peace by Jesus Christ (see Acts 10:36). Paul says to the Church at Colossae: “And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven” (Colossians 1:20).

Five times in the Epistles, God is called the God of peace (Romans 15: 33, Romans 16: 20, Phi. 4: 9, 1 Thess 5:23, Hebrews 13:20). As His children, we must be known as peacemakers. Children of God are not embarrassed to apologize first. We don’t need to get back at people when they hurt us. We are peacemakers.

God expects you to extend the peace He has shed on your path by grace. Do so today. Be a peacemaker wherever you go!
