“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36
Your purpose in life is that one thing you were created to do, and at which you must succeed regardless of whatever else you succeed at. For example, if all an electric bulb can do is to illuminate a room, it is successful, and its creator will not at all be disappointed at its inability to tell the news or the time.
I once saw a bulb that could also make music. That’s nice but secondary. If it will be called a bulb, it must give light. This is how we are to understand purpose. One question we should ask at this point is this: “What is that one thing that I was created to do, and that I must do for everything else to count?” Today’s text gives a clue with the question: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36).
The state of your soul must be your number one priority in life. You’d truly fulfill purpose when you come to know Jesus and help as many other people as you can to come to know Him as well. If you doubt this, ask yourself, when I stand before the judgment seat of Christ at the end of my life, what questions will I be asked?
Reprioritize today. Make sure your greatest investment goes to your soul. Seek first the Kingdom of God.
