“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth”
The word ‘wish’ used by John in today’s text is got from the Greek word ‘Euchomai’ which is many other times in the bible translated as ‘pray.’ John was mirroring the heart of the Father here, praying for God’s people to be in good health. Isn’t it interesting to know that God wants you in good health?
But you also have a part to play in this. You see, there are natural laws and supernatural laws.
Supernatural laws are not to replace the natural. Even Jesus the incarnate son of God often obeyed natural laws while he was on the earth. He rested. He ate. The bible teaches us that even though we can receive supernatural intervention, it would be irresponsible to have a solely supernatural approach to maintaining good health.
In Mark 5: 41-43, Jesus had just raised a young girl from the dead. It was a miracle by any standard. But see what happens in verse 43: “And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.” Even though she had miraculously raised from the dead, she still needed physical food! As long as you are in this body, there is no level of spirituality that will cause you to function without eating all the days of your life.
God’s desire is for you to be healthy. If you push yourself to ill health, you rob yourself of preaching to gospel you’re so passionate about. So eat well, exercise and get a lot of rest.
