Gospel 101

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”

(John 3:16).

At the very core of your Christian faith, is the knowledge of the gospel. You must understand the gospel not just so that you can rest assured in your eternal salvation, but well enough to teach it to others.

A good place to start is Ephesians 1:3-5:  “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.”

There is so much wealth in this text, but there are two things I want you to bear in mind. One is that God chose us in him before the foundation of the world. Second, is that he predestined our adoption in Christ.

So what is the gospel? The gospel is that God has fulfilled his plan to accept the death of his son Jesus Christ as sacrifice for sins, and has ever since granted eternal life to everyone that believes on Him.

Jesus was not an after-thought. You must understand that God had a plan before either the world or mankind were ever created. The Bible has more than enough proof of that. It contains God’s gradually unfolding plan, prophesied in the scriptures and fulfilled in the Gospels and Epistles.
