“Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord”
If there is a ‘hot topic’ in Christian today, it has got to be the issue of living above sin. A lot of Christians don’t even want to hear about the Grace message because they feel that it is a license to sin. On the other hand, many of those with a ‘works mindset’ also fall short, even though they might not admit it. So the question is, how does a Christian live above sin?
A short review of Ephesians 1 and 2 will give us the answers we seek. Ephesians 1: 7 says: “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” That is the first lesson; God has forgiven us. We have been redeemed by the blood of Christ.
“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory” (Eph 1:14). Here is another indispensable lesson anyone seeking to live above sin must have; When you believe in Jesus, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit. He is the guarantee that Christ is coming for you on the last day.
In Ephesians 1:18-20 Paul prayed that the “eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places.” He is saying here that the same power that raised Christ from the dead lives in us.That power is the Holy Spirit and He already lives in us.
Romans 8: 11 says: “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
Just as the Holy Spirit worked in Christ to raised him from the dead, he works in your empowering you to live above sin.
