DON’T BE CREATIVE

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

2 Tim. 2:15

The word ‘study’ in today’s text is ‘Spoudazo’ in the Greek, which means ‘be diligent.’ It is in no way a passive word and you’d realize this as you read further. Paul is asking Timothy here, to study as a ‘workman.’

This connotes toiling, hard-work in the study of the word. Understanding God’s word is so important. I truly believe that the best gift any Pastor can give you would be keys by which you can yourself understand the Bible.

The bible is not subject to private interpretation as some people assume. This is why I find it very interesting when we try to point people to what the bible says and say things like: “This is what it means to me.” No, that’s not right. There is a predetermined line of thoughts to be discovered.

Say for example somebody writes you a letter and says: “Go up to Ibadan and bring the car.”, It would be silly to assume that he means by “Go up” that you should climb the staircase to the last floor of your apartment building. No. That person had something he wanted to communicate before he wrote that letter.

It’s the same with the bible. Interpretation is to be discovered not created. See Ephesians 2:19,20:  “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;”

The Church as we have it today is built on the theological foundation of the Apostles. Ours is a historical faith. The reason we can be sure that we believe the same thing the Apostles believed over 2,000 years ago is because they were not creative with the word of God just to sound intelligent. Be faithful with the word.
