“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit”

1Co 12:13.

There is this popular notion that the Holy Spirit is given only to some Christians for a special assignment. As nice as that might sound, it is not true at all. In fact, it is the Holy Spirit on your inside that makes you a Christian. We’ll talk about that in detail.

Let’s start with Peter’s sermon in Acts 2:38: “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

Here, we see Peter refer to the Holy Ghost as the promise of salvation to anyone who believes in Jesus for the remission of sins. See Gal 3:13-14: “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

What can we learn from this text? Christ died so that we can receive the promise of the Holy Spirit by faith. If that’s the case, then this promise is not for some select few, but for everyone who believes in Christ.

The promise of salvation was fulfilled when God gave us his Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:13 says that after you believed the gospel of salvation, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.   You don’t need to be baptized with the Holy Spirit after becoming born again. You got born again by being immersed by the Holy Ghost into the body of Christ. He began to live in you from the moment you believed in Jesus! (1 Cor 12:13, Gal 3:27)

The Holy Spirit is not an added accessory that a Christian may or may not have. Christianity is impossible without the Holy Spirit.

DO THIS: Spend time getting to know the Holy Spirit more; talk to Him, study the word, pray in the spirit.
