Writing your faith story

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”

(Heb 11:1).

Hebrews Chapter 11 is bursting at the seams with testimonies of the heroes of faith. The man Moses, chose the ‘reproach of Christ’ over the pleasures of Egypt. He understood that his hope went beyond the riches and royalty Egypt had to offer. Moses teaches us that walking in faith may not always mean success according to worldly standards.

In fact, anyone with a poor definition of faith would call Moses stupid for leaving the palace just to join the camp of the slaves. But true faith is interested in the will of God above all else.

What about Joseph? Heb 11:22 says that “By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.” Even on his deathbed, Joseph remembered that God had a promised land for His people and desired to be buried there. Now, that is action that pointed to Joseph’s true hope.

Remember, faith is not about things. It is any action that substantiates your hope. Mat 6:33 says: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Faith is about seeking God’s will above all else. When you read the story of Abraham, don’t just connect to the fact that he was rich, see what God’s will was for him. God wanted to from Abraham, separate unto himself a people from whom the Messiah would come. Abraham was content with doing God’s will; it was God himself who now said that he would make Abraham’s name great.

Faith isn’t a tool for self-aggrandisement. It is an opportunity to submit yourself to the fulfilment of God’s plan. So, what is God’s plan? Ephesians 1:3 tells us: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”

Here, we learn that all the blessings of God are in Christ. All God has ever been truly committed to His salvation plan in Christ. When a man’s entire life is an expression of confidence in the hope of salvation in Christ, he is living a faith life.

By faith, people gave their lives for this gospel you claim to believe. Others received their dead back to life and did mighty works to the glory of God. If Hebrews 11 is to be re-written, what would be written about you? Would it just be ‘By faith he got a better job…’ or ‘By faith she got a bigger house?’ Write your faith story, let your actions and decisions point to your enduring hope of spending eternity with Christ Jesus.
