“Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,..”

2 Pet. 1:2

If you’re not careful, you’ll gauge the spirituality of your worship by your emotions. You might get carried away by the beautiful voice of the worship leader, the ambience of the instrumentalists and the tears rolling off the faces of people around that you don’t really listen to the lyrics of the song you’re singing.

Big mistake, because when you get born again, the next most important thing you must grasp is knowledge. In Ephesians 1:15-19, Paul says that after he learned of the Ephesians’ faith in Jesus and love for the saints, he did not cease praying to for them to ‘know’ the hope to which they had been called, the riches of their inheritance in the saints, and the power at work in them as believers.

Brother, sister, knowledge exposes you to all that is yours in the Lord, so that you can take full advantage of it. Nothing is as important in the place of worship as knowledge of what Christ has done and who you are because of what he has done.

When you sing a song asking God to create in you a clean heart and renew the right spirit within you, it shows that you don’t fully understand what it means to be in Christ. David could pray such a prayer, but not the man for whom Christ died. Why? God has already given you a new heart and his Holy Spirit lives in you. That is what it means to be born again!

It might seem emotional to sing that God should not forget you when he comes on the last day. But why would he? He is coming for you, he gave you his Holy Ghost as a guarantee when you believed in Jesus. Your citizenship is in heaven. You anticipate Jesus’ coming with joy because he is your daddy. You should worry about people who haven’t heard the gospel enough to tell them about it, but there’s no need for you to be afraid that your daddy is coming back soon!

What about songs that have to do with entering God’s gates and praying to behold his face? Those are not for you. David desired to see your day! You were born in the very presence of God, He lives in you. Jesus is the clearest image of God that there is, and you have a relationship with him. He is seated at the right hand of God and you with him.

Let your worship of God be based on your understanding of what Christ has done. Nothing else.
