The time of your sojourn

“And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning herein fear:”(1Pe 1:17).

One attribute of Christians is that we are intentional about the way we live our lives. You must walk in wisdom and be an example to those who are not in the faith. You must remember that you are on a mission. The purpose of your life to let people know about Christ and it’s important that you live your life in a way that doesn’t affect that negatively. You cannot live like the world or do the things they do.

Tit 2:11-14 is a very instructive text: “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”

You’ve been bought with a price, redeemed from a life of vanity to a life of purpose. This must find expression in your daily life. Build a culture of prayer and bible study. Be intentional about following a daily schedule for your spiritual growth. Keep godly friends; check on them, pray and discuss the scriptures daily.

Your plan should be to make enough money so that you aren’t distracted from your real purpose. Choose your career with a ‘gospel’ perspective. A career that won’t prevent you from your personal commitment to church (your attendance and service). Considering the state of the economy, you may have limited options but even when you have to work long hours, make sure you’re connected to a church family.

Even your friendships should not be exempt from the Christ centred purpose of your life. Be a very friendly person, but let all your friendships have a motive: to baptize them into the gospel, and to enable them experience progress and joy in the faith, directly or indirectly.

Don’t be negatively influenced, be the influencer. Don’t be found in the wrong place because of your friends, instead bring them to the right place. Let your stance and beliefs be clear to your friends.
