“There is more than ENOUGH ROOM in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?” John 14:2 NLT
In the previous article, I made a comparison between the King James Version of John 14:2 and that of The New Living Translation. What the KJV calls ‘mansions’, the NLT describes clearer and as “enough room”. By Jesus saying, there is enough room in my fathers house, he was introducing the disciples to the idea of a family relationship with God in Christ. Little wonder, after the resurrection, he says to Mary Magdalene: “…but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God”. John 20:17. His promise in John 14:2 was fulfilled.
Other newer translations are equally helpful. The New International Version (NIV) says: “My Father’s house has MANY ROOMS; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?”.
The New American Standard Bible says: “In My Father’s house are MANY DWELLING PLACES; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you.
Another simple way to understand this is to checkout the Greek word translated ‘mansion’ by KJV and how it is used in other portions of the Bible.
That Greek Word is “mone” which means “a staying, abiding, dwelling, indwelling”. The only other place it is used is the very same chapter and in verse 23 which says: “Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our ABODE (mone) with him.” So you see, the mansions the Lord Jesus refers to are not actual buildings but people. By mansions he meant places of abode or dwelling place or in simple terms ‘Temples’. God has no buildings as dwelling places. The only place He chose to dwell is in the hearts of men, and Jesus made this happen. Glory to His name.
