Eph 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
I once had a faulty measuring scale that kept giving wrong readings of my weight. Interestingly, it took a while for me to discover so I trusted the readings for a while. The same way, many people have faulty perspectives with which they measure what a good relationship is or isn’t. For many, it is the superficiality the media sells to us. For some others, it is the wrong models they grew up observing in their immediate families.
But the most authoritative perspective to marriage will remain God’s perspective seeing he designed the institution. The opening text (Ephesians 5:31) has his finger prints written all over it. Yes, Paul was quoting Genesis 2:24 but who made the statement? Adam, or Moses who wrote the book of Genesis? The Lord Jesus, quoted the same text as well, an credited that statement (implicitly) to God Himself when He said: “…Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, AND SAID, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?” Matthew 19:4-5. So we see that it was “He who made them at the beginning…” that ‘said’. Whoever made that statement however, was definitely in agreement with the will of God. The point here is this: “God ordained marriage and that makes His perspective of the institution the only perspective there really is”. Not romantic movies, not media institutions and Television series, but the word of God. When we measure right, we see right. When we see right, then we can love right.
