“He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.”
Romans 4:25 NLT
Yesterday, we started with The Gospel- His death, where we learnt two important things the death of Christ accomplished. We saw how that the death of Jesus is God’s highest demonstration of love to man, and that His death destroyed any form of hostility between Jews and Non-Jews and ushered in reconciliation to God.
Today, we will look at one very important thing the death of Jesus on the cross accomplished.
Jesus’ death on the cross was the sacrifice and payment for humanity’s sins. This is arguably one of the most important point there is to know about the death of Jesus.
Man has a specific defect, one that is singular to every man. Sin is that defect! Not every one needs to be cured from a sickness or disease, not everyone needs a financial raise- many are born into a reservoir of wealth that seems bottomless and unending. However, Man has a common identity- Sin. All men needs a saviour from sin.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;…” Romans 3:23
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” Romans 5:12
Jesus’ death served as payment and propitiation for man’s sins. Apostle Peter, in writing to believers quotes from the prophet Isaiah writing about the suffering of Christ:
“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” 1 Peter 2:24.
Our opening scripture states explicitly the essence of His death and resurrection. While His resurrection was to bestow upon man justification, His death had the primary purpose of taking away our sins. Glory to God!
The writer of Hebrews further enlightens us with regards to the death of Jesus. He says “…..but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.” Hebrews 9:26. Hallelujah! Jesus put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself- His death.
Say This: His death was the payment for my sins. I see my place in His work. I was once dead in sin but now I am dead to sin. Hallelujah!
