THE BEATITUDES: THE POOR IN SPIRIT

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matt 5:3

The richest man that ever lived proved himself with mirth (See Ecclesiastes chapter 2). He married wives, hundreds of them. He satisfied his sexual cravings the best way he could. He built houses, with gardens and pools. He hired servants and musicians in their numbers.

In his words: “And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy…” Eccl 2:10. Verse 11 says Yet, all that led him to what he called ‘a vexation of spirit’.

We don’t have to test ourselves like that before we realize that ‘things don’t satisfy.’ The first words of Jesus’ first sermon were:  “Blessed are the poor in Spirit…” God has so designed that our highest satisfaction and in fact, our only true satisfaction would come from Him.

The sincere realization of this is what it means to be poor in spirit. To be poor in spirit is for man to ‘feel’ a sense of insufficiency in himself. It is to realize a need for God and His salvation.

So ‘poverty’ in this context does not refer to money but salvation. The Psalms read: “But I am poor and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me up on high” Psa. 69:29.

Indeed, how blessed you will be to not be satisfied by petty things. How blessed you will be to not forgo the true riches in God for perishable things. Nothing that is temporary can truly satisfy. Let the blessings of the poor in spirit be yours today.

DO THIS:
Thank God because you have found true and eternal satisfaction from His indwelling Spirit.
