Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
When we want to know what God is really like, we look at Jesus.
As we study the life of Jesus, there are three scenarios that immediately reveal to you the true character of God.
The first is the story of the Samaritan woman in John Chapter 4.
First of all the Jews and Samaritans did not talk to one another. As God’s chosen people at that time, the Jews felt superior to them.
Secondly, the woman herself was most likely shunned by society. She had been married five times and was currently living with a man who she wasn’t married to.
Jesus Christ knew all these, yet he sat at the well, discussing with her in the open and offering her eternal life without any sense of judgment.
Beyond that, he gives her the opportunity to share the gospel with others.
A similar case is the sinful woman who washed his feet with her hair in Luke 7.
People whispered, saying: ‘if this man was a prophet, he wouldn’t let this sinful woman come near him.’
In response to that, Jesus gave a parable instead; “if someone is owing you one denarius and another owes you one hundred denarii, who would you love more?” What a way of thinking!
While you’re thinking what you’ve done is too evil for God to forgive, Jesus shows you that you’re the very person God wants to lavish his forgiveness on, because you will love him even more. Hallelujah!
That’s what God is like.
The story of the adulterous woman is also one that gets me every time. She was caught in the bed of adultery in John chapter 8.
The law stated that she should be stoned to death. Jesus response? ‘‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.’’
Everyone walked away one after the other. but Jesus remained. He was without sin. Yet he did not cast the first stone. ‘’Go and sin no more’’ he said. That is your God.
The one who abounds in mercy, who forgives, who sees through the eyes of grace.
Bask in his forgiveness. Tell the world about it. And extend the same to those around you. Hallelujah!
