“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
Have you ever tried to stop a habit and failed? Most likely, you tried the wrong way.
Today’s text says that your flesh (sinful tendencies) are warring against your spirit (your new desires as a born again Christian). This text has the secret to overcoming habits!
Your actions are a product of what you feed the most. If you feed your flesh, you’ll keep doing the wrong things irrespective of how bad that will make you feel.
On the other hand, you can eliminate the sinful cravings of your flesh by exercising your spirit through prayer, word study, fellowship with the brethren, and so on.
“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
You cannot stop bad habits by simply trying to stop or taking an oath. You must go to the root cause and eliminate them.
By maintaining a buoyant fellowship with God, you’d notice that the hold of wrong habits would get weaker and die.
The principle is simply this: “… Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5: 16).
Mention whatever habit you are struggling with and say: From today, I walk in the spirit all the time and I put you to death in Jesus’ name. Amen.
