“For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge”
The sad truth is that a lot of people who desire God passionately will not have access to him if they are not properly taught.
When it comes to a relationship with God, zeal is not enough. You don’t leave everyone to seek God the way they feel He should be sought. You don’t leave people to stick to an idea of God because that is what they have always known.
God is not a subjective idea. He is a person. He isn’t a combination of the different phenomenon based on individual experiences, He has a way He wants to be known.
He communicates that clearly to us in his word. Throughout the Old Testament, He revealed himself in types and shadows, but in the New Testament, He clearly reveals himself in the person of Jesus.
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”
The Apostle Paul made several efforts to convince the Jews of this truth even at the risk of losing his life. This is his position:
“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God”
Can you see that? People can be zealous and unsaved. When people are ignorant of God’s righteousness, we don’t leave them to ‘seek God in their own way.’ We know that they need the right information to be saved. So we pray for them.
But we don’t stop there. The word of God is clear on how God wants to be known. We show them how He wants to be known. We show them how that Jesus is the ONLY way, the ONLY truth and the ONLY life there is. No one comes to the Father except by Him.
