“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed”
You’ve heard people say time and again that the devil made them do some things they were not supposed to do. This isn’t always the case.
Rather, “…each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.” (James 1:14). That’s right!
The problem is generated by the lust of the flesh in man. The reason temptations are temptations is that they appeal to the things our flesh longs for.
Why do people fall to sin? They are enticed by inordinate desires in themselves, and instead of resisting with the word of God, they pay attention to those desires, fanning the flame of lust until sin is born.
“…when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin…” (James 1:15).
Don’t let sin form within you. Don’t engage in activities that fan the flame of lust.
The solution to this is a gradual but intentional process of putting the flesh to death:
“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
“…if through the power of the Holy Spirit you are (habitually) putting to death (making extinct, deadening) the evil deeds prompted by the body, you shall (really and genuinely) live forever.”
