“Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”
While sins like adultery, fornication, murder and stealing are usually frowned upon by many believers, not many take envy seriously.
But the Bible is clear about it and ranks envy as a work of the flesh in the same class as murder, idolatry, drunkenness, witchcraft among others.
Now, that is not something to ignore. If you’re a Believer who is easily jealous of others, you aren’t bearing fruit consistent with your new nature. A colleague might get a promotion you feel you deserved, be happy for them.
Another ministry might seem to be growing ‘faster’ than yours, thank God for them. Perhaps a friend is getting married while you are in your waiting period, rejoice with them.
It is not in your new nature to gossip or backbite. The Spirit you have received is one of love. Many tend to mask jealousy by simply focusing on the flaws of the other person. ‘He doesn’t deserve it’ you tell yourself, to justify a jealous heart.
But what about you? What about all the ways that God has blessed you that you didn’t deserve? Learn to be thankful for people!
Someone who doesn’t know God can afford to be jealous; his hope is limited to this life. If he doesn’t achieve the things he set out to do in this fleeting world, he doesn’t have eternity to look forward to. But not you!
You have a hope that by far transcends this life. Regardless, you win because Christ is your portion. And even for those things you desire, your heavenly Father knows you have need of them.
