“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
Today’s text is a bold statement. The Lord Jesus says: “The scriptures testify of Me”. This means that Christ is the aim of the scriptures.
A proper study of the scriptures is meant to point you to Christ. He is the message of the scriptures. The word ‘scriptures’ was often used as a collective description of all books from Genesis to Malachi.
To be sure, if Jesus in the book of John, asked that his audience search the scriptures, then the book of John couldn’t be amongst the list of books he was referring to (since it hadn’t been compiled yet).
Scriptures were otherwise called Prophecy (2 Peter 1:21). Why? They were written to testify about Christ. All the teachings in the early church were done from the scriptures (Genesis to Malachi) and they were all Christ-centered.
When the Psalms were quoted, for instance, they weren’t for mere encouragement as we often do today. In the epistles, the Psalms was one of two most quoted scripture books used to explain redemptive realities.
Many Psalms foretold the redemptive work of Christ. They are often called messianic Psalms. David saying “You won’t suffer your holy One to see corruption” was a prophecy of the resurrection of Jesus. (Psalm 16:10)
We haven’t been effective in our study of the Old Testament if we fail to see the One of whom they spoke about.
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
This is why we say that Jesus is the perfect revelation of the Father. It’s not a mere assumption or catchy phrase. It all points back to Him.
Even as you step out today, let it gladden your heart that the revelation of God is found in Christ. He is the focus of the Bible from the beginning to the end.
All of God’s creation revolves around him. All knees bow to Him. He is the focus of your life. Step out rejoicing in the fact that your life is hidden in Him. Share His message and joy with your world today.
