“Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.”
1 Timothy 5:17

For the past two days, we’ve been learning from God’s word what honour is as well as who the word of God instructs us to honour.

Today, we’ll take it a step further by looking at a third category of people that the word instructs us to honour.

Our opening scripture instructs that church leaders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, not just honour but double honour. Apostle Paul further goes on to say this honour should be conferred especially to those who labour in the word and doctrine.

When you see a man or woman devote their time and energy to help you understand the timeless truths and inexhaustible riches contained in God’s word- honour them!

The role of ministry gifts and church leaders are clearly defined.

“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: that we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”
Ephesians 4:11-15

In his first letter to the church at Thessalonica, Apostle Paul instructs the local assembly to honour those who those who had oversight of the local assembly. They were to be honoured in love for their work’s sake.

“And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves.”
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

God considers their work honourable and so must we. Yes, they have flaws, but they must be honoured!

Honour whom God has placed over you today!
