CHRISTIAN MEETINGS I

“… I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” – I Timothy 3:15

Paul wrote letters to different churches and individuals. The focal point of these letters include the revelation of Christ and Christian conduct. We shall be examining conduct as it concerns Christian meetings.

Christian meetings are meetings geared towards the “equipping of the saints for the work of ministry and for the edifying of the body of Christ”. (Ephesians 4:12)

Like any other meetings in life, a believer should prepare adequately for Christian meetings. He should take this kind of meeting even more seriously.

How does one prepare for a Christian meeting? Although there’s no direct teaching on this, scriptural inferences can be made.

A thorough examination of these inferences will lead us to one major way of preparation – prayer.

Paul in Ephesians 1:15 -20 prayed for the enlightenment of believers in certain truths which are: the hope of Christ’s calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints and the exceeding greatness of His power in us. This is a prayer that he prayed ceaselessly over the Church at Ephesus.

A reading of the book of Ephesians will affirm all Paul mentioned are the exact things he taught them in the subsequent parts of His letter. Same teachings that are taught to us at Christian meetings!

By inference, we can prepare ourselves for Christian meetings by praying this prayer, ahead of time, for ourselves and our fellow brethren.

Doing so will help prepare our hearts for the teaching of the word. Other scriptures we can pray as we prepare include: Colossians 1:9-12, Colossians 4:12 and Philippians 1:9-11.

In a situation when one knows ahead of time the theme of the meeting, he can also pray in line with it.

Apart from praying for oneself, one should also pray for the minister(s).

Paul requested for such prayers in his letters. The content of such prayers can be found in Ephesians 6:19, 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2, I Thessalonians 5:25, Hebrews 13:18, Colossians 4:3, among others.

Armed with this knowledge, let us endeavour to prepare ourselves for Christian meetings with prayers.

They go a long way in helping us understand the teaching of the word.
