If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. –
Colossians 3:1 NKJV
Football enthusiasts are known to have heart palpitations when their favourite football team wins a championship. It doesn’t matter what temperament they claim to have, their shout of victory will be the loudest.
They will share the goodnews to everyone who cares to listen. Their contacts will not rest from their avalanche of status updates.
Yet, when it comes to other matters, the same seemingly excitable individuals might exude the coldest response one can ever come across.
What is the reason for this contradictory behaviour? It can be traced to a number of sources of which affection is chief. Whatever we have affection for will always produce excitable feelings in us.
Are you excited when you hear about the things of God? Do you delight yourself in the Lord? Do you enjoy shouting “Glory!” over and over during a church service? Do you look forward to spending time in bible study and prayer?
If your answer is “no”, watch it, you might have an affection problem.
The Bible tells us to set our affection “on things above, not on things on the earth.”
Colossians 3:2 KJV
The preceding verse tells us what these “things above” mean. They are the things found “where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”
Colossians 3:1 NKJV.
Verse 12 provides a list of things we should set our minds on. They include mercy, kindness, humility, longsuffering, forbearance and above all, love.
Ephesians 1:19-23 also tells us of another thing found at the right hand of God, where Christ is seated. This thing is “authority.” Does this excite you at all?!
Are you excited when you hear that you are reigning far above all principalities and power? Does it excite you to know that demons have got nothing on you? If it does, take a short break right now to shout “Glorrrrryyyy!!!”
The believer has wonderous things to be excited about. He has more important matters to set his affections on. His heart palpitations for the things of God should be stronger!
Apply more vigour to the things of God than you use in pursuing after your favourite sport teams, movies, authors and so on. This is what it means to set your heart on things above.
Set your affections aright!
