Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” – 1 Corinthians 15:33 HCSB

In the right company, people are motivated to do things they might have struggled with. Saul, although not a prophet, prophesied in the company of prophets. (1 Samuel 10:10-11).

Peter, in the company of Jesus, walked on water (Matthew 14:28-29). The Church at Corinth was known for its demonstration of spiritual gifts. We know this because of the following biblical texts written by Paul.

He said, “I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you by Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge,” – 1 Corinthians 1:4‭-‬5 NKJV

In verse 7 of the above scripture, he added that they came short in no gifts. In 1 Corinthians 14:26, he said everyone in their gatherings had an utterance.

How amazing is that? In a company like that, it will be scarce for anyone to be unaware of the gifts of the Spirit, to say the least.

Apart from these wonderful demonstrations of the Spirit, the company of the Corinthian Church was known for misbehaviours.

In fact, the book of 1 Corinthians was written to correct these misbehaviours.

Some of them include schism (1 Corinthians 3), sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 5), strife (1 Corinthians 3:5, 11:18-19), claims of spiritual authority over one another (1 Corinthians 3:5), abuse of communal meal (1 Corinthians 11:20-22), and instituting court cases against fellow believers (1 Corinthians 6).

While correcting them, Paul wrote these: “Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse.” – 1 Corinthians 11:17 NKJV

From the above text, it is clear that certain gatherings are not good for the believer. If a church teaches the wrong things or encourages bad behaviour, its members gather for the worse.

God wants us to find ourselves in the right place, doing the right things with the right people. Therefore, we ought to seek not only the right atmosphere but also the right company.

When we find ourselves in good company, we not only do the right things, deception is also kept far away from us.
