LAY ASIDE EVERY WEIGHT

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” – Hebrews 12:1

One of the similes used to describe the Christian faith in scriptures is racing. It is common knowledge in racing that the lighter one’s weight is, the easier it is for him to cover a long distance.

Our anchor scripture makes it clear that the race before us must be run with patience and without any encumbrance.

The NLT version puts Hebrews 12:1 this way:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”

Contrary to popular opinion, the sin particularly spoken about here is “Unbelief”. To understand this, let us carefully consider the preceding chapter to our anchor scripture.

Hebrews 11 gives us a run-down of biblical ‘Heroes of Faith’. These men and women ‘obtained a good report through faith’, although they did not see the promise of the Messiah manifest in their lifetime.

“(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise”
Hebrews 11:38-39

These heroes had nothing to hold onto but the sure Word of God and they gave their lives for it. We have received this promise of God in our day. How glorious!

Hence, we should quit doubting or disbelieving God’s word to us in any circumstance. If He gave up His Son for our redemption, He can do all things!

Hebrews 12:2 gives us a simple remedy to this:

“We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor besides God’s throne.”

We must be ready to put off anything that will hold us back from giving our all to the service of the Lord. This is not a difficult task, just focus on Jesus!

Jesus kept His gaze on the joyous endgame, we should too.

Today, set your heart permanently on Him. Lay every doubt behind and place a priority on His word.
