“… I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” – 1 Timothy 3:15
Yesterday, we learnt about prayer as one major way of preparing for christian meetings. We learnt that prayer helps us to position our hearts to receive the word and all that God has for us.
Today, we will be looking at the other ways to prepare for christian meetings. The first one is fasting (Acts 13:2-3). Fasting goes hand in hand with prayers and this is not just about not eating food. It has more to do with excusing yourself from everything distracts you from paying full attention as you prepare. For instance, social media.
Another way to prepare is to have expectations. What do you expect to see? What do you want God to give you in the meeting? Write them down, don’t just have have them in your heart. The woman with the issue of blood did not only have thoughts, the Bible said “she said” (Mark 25-29). It’s not enough to think about your expectations, say them out loud and pen them down.
Also, avoid distractions. Not only while you prepare but also when you get to the meeting. Don’t sit beside someone who will be gisting with you while the teaching is going on. Put off your phones to avoid distractions from calls. Be sure not to eat anything that will upset your stomach. If there will be long hours of prayers in the meeting, ensure you dress lightly for it.
Nothing is legitimate enough to distract you from receiving all that God has for you. Take a cue from the story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10. Martha was upset with Mary for not joining her to serve Jesus. She wanted Him to rebuke Mary for not helping her with the house chores but see how Jesus responded;
“And Jesus answered and said to her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42 (NKJV)
Jesus didn’t care that the preparations were for Him. He said that one thing is needful and Mary has chosen it and it will not be taken from her. This should be your disposition.
Say this: “I focus fully in every christian meeting, every other thing can wait till the end”.
Honour your ministry gift. Don’t allow familiarity to steal from you, respect the minister. Remember that he is there in God’s stead.
Finally, participate in the meetings. Don’t be an onlooker during prayers. Lift your hands during worship and rejoice without holding back when it’s time to do so.
