LAYING ON OF HANDS FOR MINISTRY

“Do not neglect the gift that is in you; it was given to you through prophecy, with the laying on of hands by the council of elders.”
1 Timothy 4:14 HCSB

Today, we will look at the ministry of laying on of hands and its function in commissioning men for the work of the ministry.

Multiple times after the advent of the Holy Ghost, we see hands laid on people before assuming new roles and offices. The effect of this ministry is quite obvious.

“And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.”
Acts 6:5‭-‬7 (KJV)

So, we see men commissioned for a new office/work via prayer and the laying on of hands.

The result – “And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly…”

Something similar happened to Paul and Barnabas.

“As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.”
Acts 13:2‭-‬3 (KJV)

So, it is clear that asides laying hands on the sick for them to recover, laying on of hands was also effective in communicating ability and commissioning men for the ministry.

It helps to activate supernaturally the workings of the Holy Spirit in the believer.

If you are ever in a position where hands are laid on you for a new work, acknowledge that something supernatural has occurred!

Finally, remember the encounter and stir up the gift received in prayer. Like Timothy, you are thus instructed:

“Therefore, I remind you to keep ablaze the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands.” – 2 Timothy 1:6 (HCSB)
