“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.”
(Colossians 3:1 NLT)

The exchange of cultures across borders has contributed to the heightened loss of regard for moderation in our lifestyles. This ranges from our dressing, eating, talking, to our beliefs, habits and desires. To combat the fear of missing out, many people succumb to pressure and move with the flow.

As lights in a dark world, how then should we cope? We look to God’s word for the authentic control mechanism that floors all others.

In Colossians 3, Paul uses a very important approach in addressing this issue – he reminds them who they are, what they have and in whom they are seated (Col 3:1-4). Then he instructs them thus:

“So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.”
Colossians 3:5 NLT

(Now, insert your name after ‘So’ and read that verse aloud).

To mere men, this may seem onerous. However, we understand that we have the Holy Spirit in us who helps to regulate our desires and redirect them towards God. He is our Control Mechanism.

Let’s read the text below.
“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”
(Philippians 2:13 NLT)

Folks, the cultures of the world have nothing on us. We belong to a better Kingdom. Thus, if we find ourselves falling out of line, rather than strive to follow humanly prescribed remedies that have the tendency to fail, we are to draw strength from the Spirit of God dwelling in us and realign our desires in His direction.

Remember, Christ is your life and your life is His. As a result, you are to live for the praise of His name. This instruction is further spelt out in Romans 6:12-14.

Dear believer, “Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.” (2 Timothy 2:22, NLT)

SAY THIS: I am a Son of God and His spirit indwells me. By that same Spirit, I command my desires aright.
