“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.”
Galatians 5:22 NKJV

We live in a fallen and broken world where a lot of things are not just right. If a survey is carried out to find out how many people have been abused or know someone who has been abused, it’s possible that the percentage of those who have been abused or know someone who has been abused will be high.

It’s disheartening to think of the adverse effect such abuse has on the victims, their secondary survivors (other persons aware of the abuse apart from the victim). Sadly, this is the reason why some people tend to shut out others from loving them.

However, as a believer, you do not belong in this category. You have received the truest love that exists – the love of Christ. You may have had a horrible past, but you are not your past.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV

Christ went as far as the cross to prove to you how much He loves and cares for you. That wasn’t even far enough, He made you new and put a seal of His Spirit in you. Your identity is not your past, your identity is in Christ.

The bible told us a story of an immoral woman who came to anoint Jesus’ feet with her alabaster box of perfume. She was described as someone who was well known of the Pharisees (wow, you can guess how immoral she must have been). But here’s what got to me the most in the story, Jesus Christ wasn’t bothered a bit about her past even though others were. He viewed her in a different light and treated her with grace. He told her:

“Your sins are forgiven.” – Luke 7:48 NLT

This is the story of your life. You have been forgiven. You have been made new. You have the Holy Ghost and for this reason you can love. Love is not a function of where you are coming from, it is a fruit of your born again spirit (Galatians 5:22).

You may have had a rough childhood, but you are not a product of it. You are a product of grace. You are someone who is known by God, loved by Him and can love like Him.

It’s time to let go of the hurt and the pain you feel. It’s time to embrace the love of the father and bask in it. It’s time to love without fear because that’s who you are – someone who has not been given the spirit of fear but of love, power and a sound mind.

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
Philippians 2:13 KJV

God loves you so much. He wants you to heal and forgive like He forgave you. He wants you to love like He loves you. And yes, you can do this because He lives in you and empowers you to do His will.
