“Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.”
Galatians 6:10 NLT

We have learnt extensively on the subject of love in the past weeks and its application in our relationship with our friends, partners and others. Today’s study is an emphasis on our love for fellow believers.

Love is the nature of every believer. You are expected to do it effortlessly and at all times. Our anchor scripture is a simple instruction to do good to everyone, regardless of their color or status, and much more to our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The ten commandments attributed to Moses in the Old Testament were beautifully summarized by Jesus in Mark 12:29-31 thus:

“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31, KJV)

Jesus says the love for God and our neighbors is paramount – like a compulsory question in an exam that must be passed. No other requirement is greater than this.

Paul further helps to reinforce this love instruction in 1 Corinthians 13:2. “If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing.” (NLT)

Clearly, love is a vital attribute of believers like a badge that distinguishes us from the rest. Love is our identifier. Hence, we cannot afford to take a love break or reserve it for a select few. This badge of love should not be removed, dear soldier!

It is also important to consider that we all are one body in Christ. (Romans 12:5) Just as the head is concerned about the pain of a finger in the natural sense, so must we be concerned about our brothers and sisters in our local churches and the global body of Christ.

To this end, we must genuinely seek the best for others, show care and carry their burdens, intercede for them and support them. When it is well with others, it is well with us.

SAY THIS: Love is my identity. I love like Christ. I love my fellow believers. I do good unto all men.
