“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4 ESV
A big question on the hearts of believers who want to get others filled with the Spirit is “What if they don’t speak in tongues?” This is a valid question and the word of God is not silent about its answer.
Our anchor scripture tells us that every single person in the upper room was filled with the Holy Ghost and they all began to speak in other tongues. That tells us that anyone who believes in Jesus can be filled with the Holy Ghost. What then can be wrong if a person does not speak in tongues after being prayed for?
Many times, it can be as a result of ignorance or wrong doctrine. Some people have been taught that the Holy Spirit is only for certain people and not all. This belief can be a hindrance to the infilling of the Spirit but we have established from Acts 2:4 that it is a wrong notion to have.
Again in Acts 10, Cornelius and all his household; old and young, servants and master, were filled with the Holy Ghost.
“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13 KJV)
Jesus Himself said in the above scripture that God will not withhold good gifts from His children that ask. Show these portions of scripture to anyone who has such erroneous belief that they can’t receive the Holy Ghost. If they don’t speak in tongues still, they just may not be ready yet.
Other people may also believe that the Holy Spirit will open their mouths for them to speak in tongues. That is not true.
Yes, we are filled with the Spirit but we do the speaking. We are able to control how we speak, and by our level of reception, the move of God in our lives (1 Corinthians 14:32).
If you are yet to speak in tongues, don’t hold back because you are afraid of speaking gibberish. It is a heavenly language, which only God understands and it is designed not to make sense to your natural mind. Don’t let that freak you out.
“For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.”
(I Corinthians 14:2 NKJV)
To pray in tongues and grow spiritually, get these hindrances out of the way. As an effective minister of the gospel, communicate these truths to the people you are evangelising to or discipling and watch them grow like never before.
