CONTEND EARNESTLY

“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” Jude 1:3 KJV

Throughout last month, we discussed important reasons why we should share our faith and practical steps by which to do this.

It is important to know that we should not only share the right message, but seek to unroot any message that disguises to be the gospel, but is not. This is how we contend for faith.

God’s will is that the body of Christ believes the same message. The fundamental of every Christian’s faith, regardless of denomination, should be that we are saved by grace through faith. Every other essential part of our Christian walk should also align with the correct, rightly  interpreted doctrine of the Bible.

Teaching this is also a huge part of your evangelism.

“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.” (Ephesians 4:13,15 KJV)

In your journey of spreading the gospel, you may encounter people who claim to be saved but actually believe the wrong thing about salvation. They may also hold wrong views about God masked behind different religions or denominations of Christianity. You should seek to let them know the truth in love.

Contending for the faith denotes an effort to prevail over something. It is a holy competition over another ideology. Don’t be quiet about it because that will not be out of love. Let’s see how Apostle Paul addresses this in another portion of scripture.

“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.” (2 Corinthians 10:5-6 ESV)

While it may seem like Paul is referring to spiritual authority and warfare, he is specifically saying that the accurate way to destroy arguments against God is by confronting them with the truth of His word.

Love should be your greatest motivation in contending for the faith. Equip yourself to defend your faith when the need arises. Resolve to be an active soldier of Christ today.
