“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all.”
1 Corinthians 12:4 NLT
Yesterday, we learnt that we have the spirit of God in us, which gives us gifts, otherwise referred to as charismatic abilities. Today, we will consider practical steps in exercising these abilities.
Before moving on, let us see why we need spiritual gifts in the first place.
The gifts of the spirit is God’s idea, enveloped in the person of the Holy Spirit as an unmistakable proof of His presence. (Acts 1:8) The operation of spiritual gifts usually opens the door for effective ministry of the Gospel, and amplifies human efforts. That is, they make way for exponential results! (1 Corinthians 2:4, Romans 15:19-20)
Now that this is clear, here a few steps to take in demonstrating these gifts:
First, study God’s word. Studying the word of God is the bedrock to exercising your charismatic ability. Create time to read Bible passages that speak to this subject, listen to messages on it and direct your questions to your spiritual leaders or guides. Meditate on it, till you become convinced of the ability you carry.
Studying never gets out of fashion because God’s word is stable and unchanging. (1 Peter 1:25) And here, you’d find timeless truths to stir up your faith.
Second, spend time praying. You guessed right! Pray out the truths you have read and understood from the word. Declare your possession of all spiritual gifts. Pray for boldness. Build your faith in the place of prayer. (Jude 1:20) Affirm to yourself that the same spirit which was in Jesus and the early apostles, is at work in you, to do exploits for God.
And third, step out in action. In simple terms, just do it. As you perform your daily activities, be conscious of the Spirit you carry, and seek avenues to express him. If someone is sick, minister healing to them.
When praying for someone, seek to find God’s heart in that situation and give a word of wisdom or knowledge. Encourage someone with the gift of faith. Speak in tongues and interpret the same. Prophecy.
The third can be daunting at the beginning, but if you continue to repeat process 1 to 3 in that order, you would be able to easily exercise these gifts in no time. And the more you study, pray and use your gifts, the better you would become at it. Remember, it’s the gift of God’s spirit, and God can be trusted.
Beloved, study, pray and do. You have received the gifts, so go forth and profit with them. Associate yourself with other believers, especially those who are already exercising theirs. Be bold, God is counting on you.
