“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:”
I Corinthians 12:7 NKJV
Spiritual gifts (properly called spirituals) are not things you have, they are things you do. Spirituals refer to the actions of the Spirit. Just like ‘wind’ refers to the movement of the ‘air’.
They are an expression of the Spirit of God in you. So the manifestation is not meant to be hoarded. It is not for one person to say ‘I have 5 Spiritual gifts and you have 2 spiritual gifts’ and to demonstrate gifts only for his own benefit.
In the first place, spirituals are not one-off gifts that can be counted. It may be that you manifest a word of knowledge while simultaneously giving a prophecy and interpreting tongues. This is because the situation would call for it and the work of the Spirit is to supply the solution to that situation.
The Spirit supplies different solutions to different situations (I Corinthians 12:4-6). They are all the supply of the Spirit. Anyone that has the Holy Spirit can supply God’s answer to every need.
Second thing to note is that Spirituals are not self-serving. They are for the benefit of the Church.
“But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.”
I Corinthians 14:3-5 NKJV
Paul said that prophecy is greater than tongues not because tongues are a lesser expression but because prophecy brings edification to the church of God. The focus is on what brings edification to the larger body, not just one person. Remember the context of the expression of spirituals should always be love (1 Corinthians 13)
So what’s the lesson here? Speak in tongues and prophesy also. Edify yourself and edify the church also. Have faith to receive a healing and have faith to be a healer of others also.
The Spirit of God is in you! Supply!
