“Passion for your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”
Psalms 69:9 (NLT)

Our anchor text is from a psalm written by David; a man who was extremely passionate about God. The text speaks of great zeal towards God such that whatever concerned God affected him directly. Interestingly, this same trait was recorded of Jesus in John 2:17.

“Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: ‘Passion for God’s house will consume me.’”
John 2:17 (NLT)

When we speak of someone being zealous about something, two attributes readily come to mind: Enthusiasm and Commitment. We will discuss both attributes in light of our spiritual devotion.

Enthusiasm is basically strong excitement about something. We are often taught that our devotion to God should be a ‘delightful duty’. This means we must do it and we must be excited about doing it.

The Bible says this of David: “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.” Psalms 122:1 (KJV)

Friends, spiritual things should always get you pumped. Hearing or studying God’s word for example, should never be normal or cliché for you but continually spur you to exultation. Likewise, the excitement you derive from watching your favorite tv show should be nothing compared to your love for prayers and evangelism.

Even when it was logically inconsistent with human feelings, the Bible records in Acts 5:40-41 that the disciples rejoiced after being beaten for the sake of the Gospel, “…rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.” (Acts 5:41b, KJV)

Such zeal for God!

Moving on to Commitment, an outstanding example is seen in Apostle Paul. Through the book of Acts and the Epistles, we read of his doggedness in ensuring that people heard the gospel and grew in their understanding of same. Let’s see the text below.

“And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.”
Acts 19:10 (KJV)

Also, we read of Jesus who from a young age (to the amazement of many) was clearly committed to God. “And He said to them, How is it that you had to look for Me? Did you not see and know that it is necessary [as a duty] for Me to be in My Father’s house and [occupied] about My Father’s business?”
Luke 2:49 (AMPV)

As men saved by grace, we cannot afford to be passive about our devotion to God. We must be emotionally invested in His service, exuding delight and seriousness in all we do.

Friends, this is a wake-up call. There should be no relenting in your devotion to God. Revive that passion today.
